Do
- Find out (from employees) whether they agree with management safety priorities
- Engage your OH provider when selecting your safety management system
- Use behavioural as a dialogue when consulting with employees
- Refer behavioural safety concerns for review by OH
- Make sure that investigation activities focus on root causes of behaviours
- Be sure that a behavioural approach is really what you need right now
- Include OH in the selection of facilitators who understand and advocate for safety
Don't
- Underestimate the effort and planning required
- Be over-optimistic
- Get carried away and lose focus on other aspects of safety
- Believe that the ‘Heinrich triangle‘ works for occupational ill-health, minor personal injuries and major accidents
